Opinion: Horizon Zero Dawn - A beautiful but familiar experience

Horizon Zero Dawn
Beautiful but familiar
As of February 2018, Horizon Zero Dawn, the open-world action-roleplaying game developed by Killzone creators Guerrilla Games, has sold 7.6 million copies worldwide. Not only has it amassed some impressive sales figures; the overall critical consensus has been "generally favourable" according to Metacritic, where it currently holds a score of 89/100.

It seems then that with Horizon Zero Dawn critics and gamers agree that the PlayStation 4 exclusive is one of the systems most outstanding titles. Indeed, aside from the critical praise and impressive sales numbers, Horizon Zero Dawn has won a host of 'Game of the Year Awards' from some of the industries most respectable outlets.

So, after recently finishing Horizon Zero Dawn, why do I feel like I'm the only one who didn't enjoy a game which everyone appears to hold so dear? Why didn't it captivate me as much as I thought it would?

God of War - Two-hour hands-on preview in Sydney, Australia

God of War Preview
God of War preview
At a recent hands-on experience in Sydney, Australia; Impulse Gamer gave me the chance to preview the first few hours of the upcoming action-adventure video game, God of War.

On March 14th, I got to sit down with Sony Santa Monica's Senior Community Strategist, Aaron Kaufman for an exclusive preview of God of War in Sydney, Australia.

After the events of God of War 3, and set in the world of the Norse Gods; Kratos lives with his son Atreus in small log cabin hidden away in the woods. And it's here where Kratos must teach his son how to survive the monstrosities that encompass every inch of their environment.

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt*Screenshot Sunday #2*

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of my favourite ever games.

Including all the DLC, I spent well over 300 hours slaying beasts across an array of visually stunning continents. And although open-world games are probably not for everyone; this particular adventure deserves all the praise bestowed upon it.

Movies You May Have Missed! - Gattaca (1997)

Gattaca Ethan Hawke Jude Law Uma Thurman
"There is no gene for the human spirit."
Director: Andrew Niccol
Written by: Andrew Niccol
Starring: Ethan Hawke, Jude Law, Uma Thurman
Distributor: Columbia Pictures
Release: October 24, 1997
Origin: United States
Genre: Science Fiction

"For someone not meant for this world, I must confess, I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once a part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving; maybe I'm going home."

Released in October 1997, Gattaca was written and directed by New Zealander Andrew Niccol. In what was Niccol's debut film, it received extremely positive feedback from critics. Though the film wasn't a smash at the box office, it has become somewhat of a cult classic. If you like your sci-fi intelligently written, with excellent acting and beautiful cinematography, then you'll find that watching Gattaca is as rewarding as it is intriguing.

Bad Games Movies TV 2015
The bad
Following on from part one (the good), I'm now going to concentrate on the games, movies, and TV shows of 2015 that I didn't get on with. Before I begin, this list only includes material that I played or watched this year.

So, here we go again...

Games, Movies, and TV of 2015! Part One - The Good

Games, Movies, and TV! The best of 2015
The good

Part two (the bad)

As the year comes to a close, I thought I'd have a good think about what impressed me over the course of 2015. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to play every game or watch every TV show this year, so undoubtedly this list will be void of some movies and games (Like Metal Gear Solid V), that I'm sure would have made the cut had I got my mitts on them.

Nevertheless, I can only share my opinion on what I've experienced first hand, and with that said, let's begin...

Topping Deus Ex: Human Revolution will not be Easy

Deus Ex Mankind Divided Feature
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Set two years after the events of Human Revolution, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided sees Adam Jensen return to a series that will undoubtedly have moral compasses spinning into overdrive.

Showcasing Jensen and his augmentations in full effect, every cinematic trailer or gameplay video for Human Revolution is looking promising so far. As I sit here and watch these previews, I can't help but be overcome with nostalgia, as my mind casts back to 2011, and the feelings I had playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution on PlayStation 3.

The story of Human Revolution begins with Adam Jensen being left for dead after a terrorist attack on Sarif Industries. To survive, he undergoes life-saving operations replacing parts of his body with futuristic technology. Once equipped with his state-of-the-art augmentations, he's given a chance to seek answers and carry out revenge on those responsible for the attack that almost led to his demise. Topics such as robotics, morality and the essence of being human are all raised in Human Revolution, as Jensen gets caught up in the debate about whether transhumanism should even exist.

Excellent or Bogus? Movie Remakes and Reboots!

Movie Remakes and Reboots
Excellent or bogus?

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Memento, and The Birds. These are just three examples of upcoming reboots that intend to make a quick buck at the box office.

I don't find remakes particularly exciting, especially if the reboot is a franchise that doesn't warrant it. But sometimes it's difficult to ignore a remake, especially if it concerns an old movie that I particularly like.

A movie that's dear to my heart is the 1987 masterpiece RoboCop. Now, I wasn't impressed when I learned of the proposed reboot. Obviously, the remake was going to be awful, and it didn't require a genius to conclude RoboCop 2014 wouldn't even come close to bettering the original.

A Trip Back in Time to 1999! – Jet Force Gemini

Jet Force Gemini Review
Where's an aardvark when you need one?
Released in late 1999 and published by Rare, Jet Force Gemini was available only for the Nintendo 64. Overall, it received mostly positive reviews on its release, though sales figures didn’t reflect this and no sequel was forthcoming.

The game's plot revolves around the three members of the Jet Force Gemini team – a human named Juno, his twin sister Vela and a dog called Lupus. Specifically, the group is attempting to defeat an evil warlord called Mizar and save the galaxy.

The basic plot of Jet Force Gemini consists of the team being split up in the opening exchanges of the game as Mizar and his army attack their spaceship. After the attack, the three have no option but to abandon their cruiser and go their separate ways. You control each of the characters in a third-person perspective as you set upon and explore different planets.

Each world has hostile inhabitants, which results in a little space combat, although the game isn’t just a blast everything in sight experience. Throughout the adventure, exploration is vital, as to progress past each stage, you must find and save prisoners known as Tribals. Additionally, you must also collect spaceship parts later in the game.

Games You May Have Missed! – Vanquish

Vanquish PS3
Futuristic sci-fi action mayhem!
Available on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, Vanquish is a third-person futuristic shooter directed by Shinji Mikami and published by Sega. Eventually released in October 2010, after being in development since 2007; you play US agent Sam Gideon in a futuristic battle where nations fight for what's left of the Earth's natural resources. Vanquish begins with Russian forces capturing the American Space Station, and diverting its solar energy to create a powerful Death Star-esque weapon. They then demonstrate the weapon's power by destroying San Francisco in an epic blast of energy. The main antagonist, Victor Zaitsev, demands the US surrender or New York City is next in line for obliteration. Predictably, the US retaliates to the catastrophe and declares war. Armed with the Augmented Reaction Suit, or ARS for short, Sam and his team head out to overthrow hostiles, rescue hostages and exterminate any resistance that they encounter.

No Man's Sky will be a Voyage into the Cosmos

Explore the universe in No Man's Sky
There are countless stars in our universe, but only a small selection is visible in the night sky. As such, we are tiny, a mere dab of dust in an unimaginably enormous cosmos that contains billions of solar systems within vast galaxies.

Indeed, it seems Hello Games know we are all part of something incomprehensible, and with their upcoming release, No Man's Sky, they want us all to go on a voyage into the stars. The galactic map in No Man's Sky is gigantic, with each beacon of light signifying a star. That star is part of a solar system contained within a galaxy; each galaxy includes multiple solar systems, all with numerous planets of different origin.

A Lack of Articles? Blame Geralt

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
I say, a game of Gwent anyone?
You may have noticed a distinct lack of activity coming from the realms of Unlocked Gaming in the past few weeks. There is, however, a valid reason for the lack of posts, and that is because of a certain game called The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt...

Two weeks ago I finally got my hands on a copy of this epic game, and I'm struggling to find time to do anything else in life. I expect if you're reading this that you are aware of The Witcher 3, as it's been out for a little while now. You may also be aware that it has received widespread critical acclaim. But is it the best open-world game ever? So far it's been a pleasure to experience, but I feel as though I've only just scratched the surface of this gigantic adventure.

Mass Effect: Andromeda - A New Trilogy?

Mass Effect Andromeda Trilogy
Mass Effect Andromeda won't be the last in the series
E3 2015 had an abundance of huge announcements over the weekend. Two of the biggest were Fallout 4 and Mass Effect: Andromeda.

A New Trilogy?

The Mass Effect: Andromeda trailer debuted at the EA games conference and featured an armoured N-7 soldier navigating a galaxy map, looking through all kinds of different planets.

Developer BioWare has confirmed on their official site that while Mass Effect 3: Citadel was being completed, plans had already begun for the next instalment in the series. So far we know Mass Effect: Andromeda will take place far away from, and long after the original trilogy. A new galaxy to explore, A new Mako to pilot, and a host of new characters to meet have all been confirmed. It would be safe to assume that Andromeda is going to be more of the same that we saw with the original Mass Effect games, but what else can we expect to see?

Sony's Reveal of Shenmue 3 is a Winner! Trailer & Reaction

Shenmue3 Sony E32015
Shenmue 3 is coming, and you should be excited!
Sony's reveal at E3 that they are helping and funding the development of Shenmue 3 was received with great excitement and joy.

For years, dedicated fans, Facebook groups and Twitter users have rallied hard to try and get a continuation of the Shenmue saga in development. The campaign to get Shenmue funded on Kickstarter was immediately successful, overtaking its original target of USD 2 million in less than 9 hours. "We can unfold the continuous story, "Shenmue III will be the story you have waited for. The fate of Shenmue is in your hands now" Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki said defiantly.

There is still a long way to go before we get to see Shenmue again, with financial targets yet to be reached. The estimate on a release date is currently ranging from mid-2017 to late 2017. Either way, most fans won't be too bothered as long as the chance to play Ryo Hazuki again is on the horizon.

E3 2015: Sony - Horizon: Zero Dawn Trailer Thoughts

E3 2015 Sony Horizon Zero Dawn Trailer
Killzone developer Guerrilla Games showcased their latest project at the Sony E3 game conference this weekend with PlayStation exclusive, Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Undoubtedly one of Sony's most popular announcements at E3, we've had a detailed look at the Horizon trailer, and we are going to share a few thoughts on the upcoming open-world adventure.

The trailer began with a women searching a cave looking at a past civilisation that had left markings scattered throughout its walls. The narrator went on to explain how "the old ones" had throughout history gone from cave dwellers to building "incredible cities and towers that reached for the stars". And that "darkness came and the cities faded away".

3 of my Favourites from the '90s

GoldenEye N64
Multiplayer mayhem!
GoldenEye 007 (N64, 1997)

When I was a young boy, I wanted to be like James Bond. Now that may sound a little crazy, but I couldn't have been the only one with aspirations to one day become a top secret agent.

Unfortunately, back in 1997, I didn't know a licence to kill was just a novelist invention, or that my chances of being needed for MI6 field operations were slim to none. Nevertheless, courtesy of developer Rare, and publisher Nintendo, I could at least pretend I was a spy with GoldenEye oo7.
